Big crowds for karting series

6/06/2008 12:59:00 PM
KARTING enthusiasts from across WA were drawn to Esperance on the Saturday and Sunday of the long weekend to participate in the third round of the annual South Eastern Zone Series.

There were more than 100 participants across 12 classes at the Esperance circuit, with racers travelling from across the Great Southern to participate in the competition titled: The Laminex Group presents the ‘Having a Play’ Memorial Round Three.

Gary McCrea, Esperance Kart Klub President, said the round was titled in memorial of the Esperance locals and Kart club devotees Bill Green, Glenn ‘Rowdy’ Pitchers and Norm Wright who were tragically killed in a plane accident in May 2007.

“I think all of the local participants put on their best racing over the weekend not just because points were going towards the championship round but also because they all knew Bill, ‘Rowdy’ and Norm, and wanted to put in a good effort in memory of them,” Mr McCrea said.

“One class in particular that was a sentimental favourite with the crowd was the class Norm’s son Nick participated in and won - he was the only local winner from round three.

“But although Nick was the only local winner, all of the Esperance participants put in some skilful racing which made for some competitive rounds.”

Representatives from Cullity’s - the Laminex Group, one of the major sponsors of the event, attended the Esperance round and said they were excited to be involved in such a well-regarded community event.

“This is the second year Cullity’s - The Laminex Group has supported the South Eastern Zone Series and we were keen to lend a helping hand both times to support a renowned regional competition that went to communities in which we operate,” Melissa Guppy, marketing manager for the Laminex Group said.

The final championship round of the competition is being held in Albany on August 23 - 24, 2008.
