NEWTOWN-CONDINGUP relished the opportunity of playing before more than 7,000 football loving fans with an impressive 60-point win over Esperance in a curtain raiser to the Fremantle Dockers-West Coast Eagles derby played at Subiaco Oval last Sunday.

The round nine match saw the Lions run out comfortable winners despite facing some solid pressure from the Esperance Bulldogs during the first half.

Little separated the two sides for the first two quarters before the Lions, thanks to a five-goal haul from Michael McArthur, were eventually able to break clear in the second half.

The game itself was played in good spirits with the Lions running and supporting team-mates while the Bulldogs kept applying pressure.

McArthur proved the Lions best with good performances also handed in by Cameron Marshall, Isaiah Rogers (two goals), Nikolas Scott (two goals) and the talented Korrie Searle.

For Esperance, Harold Madden proved one of the better performers, along with Trent Delahide and Jed Peabody while Ethan Hindmarsh rounded off the best players.

Final score Newtown-Condingup 12.12 (84) b Esperance 3.6 (24).

The other game, played at Ports Oval, saw the Blues stage a thrilling battle with the Tigers before Gibson came away to claim the game by 22 points.

It was a good game, the Tigers started strongly before Ports fought their way back during the second and third quarters. Both sides had their chances but the Tigers finished off a little too strongly.

Jordan McAllister proved the tigers best on ground while Brodie Green (four goals), and Guy Green both played well, Callum Tyrrell, Patrick Howell and Josh Montgomerie all made their presence felt, along with Josh Mewburne and Thomas Pengilly.

For the Blues, Luke Pilmer worked hard, as did Joel Turner and Clinton Symes, Isaac Puna and Truan Cox rounded off the best.

Final score Gibson 8.4 (52) b Ports 4.6 (30).

IT was better news for the Bulldogs with Esperance taking a six-goal win over Newtown-Condingup while Ports continued their good form in this grade with a fighting two-goal win over Gibson.

Esperance played a good brand of football, making use of their scoring opportunities with three goals in each the first, third and final terms setting up the win.

The Lions tried hard to rally but could not match the Bulldogs as Brian clinch (four goals) helped dish out a scoring lesson.

Unfortunately there was not game highlights of Esperance best players for the match.

For the Lions, Harley Brown proved the best on ground, Hayden Searle also played well along with Colin Wheeler, Waisen Nakaleiru, Cain Willing and Nick Pakanyi.

Final score Esperance 10.7 (67) b Newtown-Condingup 4.7 (31).

Ports were forced to work for the win over Gibson as the tigers applied plenty of pressure and looked threatening in the first term.

Boasting just a one-point break at the first change Ports were unable to find the gaps in the Tigers defence and were forced to record just one goal during the second and third terms.

A 13-point lead at the final change didn’t look enough as the Tigers lifted kicking three quick goals before the Blues settled and were able to answer the challenge.

It was atop last quarter from both teams, the wind played a big part all game and both sides showed fight and skills throughout.

Best players for the Blues were Tim Warren, Billy Vibart rated highly after a solid our quarter effort while Matt Keevil and Jordan Ross did well.

Trevan Ellmers and Damian White rounded off the best, along with Ben Harris.

For Gibson, Ervin Skinner and Lazen Costaine played well along with Cameron Wholing, Mitchell Jones and J Norwood.
