Community Agencies Meet

21/08/2008 3:41:00 PM
WORKERS from various fields of community services in Esperance gathered at the Taylor Street Tearooms on Friday, August 8 to meet and discuss with each other their roles in the community.

The Interagency Breakfast for Community Services has been operating since the beginning of 2007 and is held every two months.

Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre coordinator and initiator of Interagency Breakfast Sue Meyers said the meeting was an opportunity to highlight what a community service agency does.

“There were a lot of people who didn’t know about the different types of community services available and the people who worked in these services,” she said.

The Esperance Shire had its turn in the spotlight and executive manager of community services Rod Hilton described the many services the shire provides, including the running of the Senior Citizens Centre, the Civic Centre, and the Visitors Information Centre.

Sometime in September the shire will be holding its own information session inviting other community service providers.

“The idea is just to know who’s providing what in the community and what difficulties the agencies might have in delivering those services.”

Mr Hilton said it would also be an opportunity for people to apply for the Community Development Funding, which is distributed every year to community services and non-profit organisations.

“The more applicants we receive the more we realise the amount of need there is out there from community services.”

At the Breakfast Helen Ducey from Participation Team of the Esperance District Educational Office took the opportunity to introduce two new employees, Vanessa Rennie and Casey Capelli.

Mrs Ducey, who has attended previous Interagency Breakfasts, said they are a very valuable occasion to network and link with other services.
